Find your purpose today

“What am I doing with my life?”

Ever asked yourself that question? If you're anything like me (or any average person), the answer is almost certainly yes.

The inherent problem with this question is that unless you already know what your purpose is, you won't be able to come up with a satisfactory answer (and if you know what your purpose is, you won't be asking the question in the first place).

Simon Sinek, in his book Start With Why, writes “Regardless of WHAT we do in our lives, our WHY—our driving purpose, cause or belief—never changes.” And so understanding your WHY, your purpose, is the necessary starting point to understanding WHAT to do with your life.

“But what is my purpose you rambling idiot!?” I know, I know – I'm getting to that bit.

Purpose isn't something we create for ourselves. We don't wake up one day and suddenly decide that our purpose is to become a great sportsman or rid humans of disease. Our purpose is instead developed throughout our childhood, and so to uncover what your purpose is – you need to look back over your life.

Try this exercise...

Set aside half an hour to look back over your life so far, and put your Sherlock Holmes hat on because the aim of this is to look for clues. Look back for moments where you were passionate and determined, and which left you happy and fulfilled.

Whether it was looking after a neighbour's dog to helping your niece with a piece of art homework, these are all clues as to what career might be right for you.

List these moments down, and write down any corresponding clues and potential careers that come to mind.

Meditate on these for a few days. Then, with these clues in hand, you'll need to go out and see for yourself if you still have that passion. Look to courses or evening classes in your area (or even free online classes using Coursera or Khan Academy). Keep throwing yourself at different activities and interests until that passion from your youth is reignited - then you'll know you've found it!
